The Solar iBoost Heat Pump Interface (HPI) solution provides a simple to install, cost effective solution to allow customers to utilise solar diversion when an air source heat pump is the primary water heating device.  

BOTH the Heat Pump and Solar iBoost+ operate independently whilst sharing the immersion connection. The Solar iBoost Heat Pump Interface intelligent switching allows both devices to work seamlessly together but independently.

How Does It Work?

In normal operation the Solar iBoost+ has control of the immersion and diverts excess solar energy when available.

When the heat pump needs to complete a legionella cycle or other boost functions, control is automatically switched to the heat pump supply to activate the immersion. A set of relays within the Heat Pump Interface switch between the Solar iBoost output and Heat Pump control. 

Switching is controlled by an onboard microcontroller. On command from the Heat Pump, the Solar iBoost is disconnected providing a safety delay before switching over to the Heat Pump control. 

To accommodate a number of different Heat Pump designs, the Heat Pump Interface can deal with a number of incoming signals/supplies:

  • 230VAC 3kW supply  
  • 230VAC <3kW supply  
  • DC signal +5 to +24 VDC max 
  • Voltage free contact at Heat Pump

To allow operation with different signals from different input sources from an ASHP, a small ‘jumper’ connector is used to configure how the interface should operate

Three pins are fitted to the PCB, the jumper fits across two of the pins in either positions A or B as below or removed completely

  • Wire the Solar iBoost and Heat Pump to the HPI as illustrated and then a single connection from the HPI to the immersion.
