Seeing the end product is one thing, but we hope that by learning how that product came to be, our readers will gain a deeper level of understanding as to who we are at Marlec. So, in preparation for the launch of our very own EV charger, the Veva, we have conducted an insightful Q&A with our Sales Director – Stuart James.
The Marlec staff are beyond excited for our Veva to hit the shelves and want to thank those who have supported the Veva journey so far.
1. What inspired Marlec to develop the Veva product, and how does it address the current market needs in the industry?
Marlec is the longest-standing renewable energy company in the UK. Plus, anyone in the engineering or technology field understands the importance of staying current. The rise of electric vehicles is now well and truly upon us, with government policy setting targets to abolish petrol and diesel vehicles.
In that sense, it was a no-brainer for us. Developing a new product in an almost new territory was always set to be a challenge. Still, one we felt necessary to evolve our business and maintain our standing as green technology experts.
The market needs trustworthy EV chargers now more than ever. Public opinion is sensitive, and if we want to keep the UK on track with sustainability, the market must have at least one charger built with a foundation of expertise in the field.
2. Could you walk us through the research and development process of Veva? What were some key challenges faced, and how were they overcome?
We’re lucky to have the R&D department we do here at Marlec and trusted partners whom we have worked with for other successful products over the last few years. Firstly, we accessed the current EV Chargers on the market and created a wish list of functions and features we either liked or believed would benefit the user. From that point onwards, our decisions were geared towards making a product that installers would love and trust with the functionality required by the end user.
The changing legislation that covers EV Chargers and mandates their functionality was a challenge, but as we were in the product development stage during significant changes, we could design a product that was fully compliant and future-proof from the day it was launched.
3. What sets the Veva product line apart from existing solutions in the market, and what unique features can customers look forward to?
The most significant selling point of our charger centres around its simplicity. We’ve worked hard on the Veva for two years now so that users and installers alike don’t have to! Because we’ve been selling our hugely successful Solar iBoost+ for so long, we’re really in tune with the needs of electricians and installers. Yes, wholesalers might sell our products, but Marlec provides installation and customer support.
Customers will be excited to customise their Veva’s to their aesthetic preferences. We’ve designed our charger to incorporate interchangeable facias. Users can swap out the face of the unit for different colour variations.
This led us to create a super simple, easy-to-pick-up product that works with government guidelines, building regulations and ticks all the boxes for any installer of EV chargers out there. For instance, the Veva has built-in pen protection, is smart charge points compliant, and incorporates load balancing, promising super easy installation and commissioning. An extra plus found with the Veva is its solar compatibility. Not all EV chargers have this function integrated into the design as standard. They require additional purchases like a PV inverter, which comes with additional costs to the user, but not our Veva.
